Does not install on older iPads and iOS versions. The NY Times App installs and works on my older iPad and iOS. But there is no alternative that I s backwards compatible with this NY Time cooking App. The install is stuck in a loop - complaining that I need to install and older version of the App, which is actually not available.

Will not let subscribers use if they do not have IOS 18. Why ban prior versions from use if one has an older ipad?

No printing allowed. For $42, I just renewed my NYT cooking app. While I like the recipes, I’m unhappy that I can’t print them for my own personal cookbook.

Please allow old iOS versions to use this!. There’s no reason you need to gate off old app versions.

App won’t work anymore. I used to love this app on my iPad, but today requires that I update to an operating system my iPad can’t update to. Very frustrating that I can’t just use the old version which worked perfectly fine yesterday!

Disappointed. I have loved the cooking app until the day when I couldn’t access any of my recipes because my iPad can’t be upgraded to iOS 18. I do not want to purchase another iPad to accommodate the cooking upgrade. Is there any way I could still use the old app?

Denied access. Typical NYT arrogance — deny anyone who doesn’t have a mobile device that supports the latest iOS version access to this app.

Required iOS incompatible with device. Looks like I’ll need to spend $300+ to replace my ipad to use this version of NYT cooking - and also NYT Games - gotta wonder if it is worth it. Have certainly. updated lots and lots of apps and only the NYT presents this difficulty. Obviously. don’t care much about their users.

New disappointing update. I have used this app since subscribing to NYT digital app over 20 years ago. New update will not work on my iPhone 8plus. I’m a senior living abroad on a limited budget getting chemotherapy. I’m not buying a new phone. This update is unnecessary.Cooking app was the only thing in NYT news that didn’t stress me out. Disappointed. Was able to reinstall app with the old running system. I am happy now. Thank you. Now, if you could do something about content in regular NYT that gets me stressed every day THAT would really help me :)

No Longer Works on Our iPad. As the title says, if you have an older iPad, the app doesn’t work. NYT could have left the previous version for us, but shut us out instead.

Can’t update - frustrating you’ve made it so I can’t use without update.. I use NYT cooking primarily on my iPad and and am unable to update it to the new ios18. Not an issue for anything else I use it for but now impossible to use for displaying recipes while I cook. SUPER FRUSTRATING! Why can’t you let people continue to use old version of app without forcing updating? My experience might not be as good without the new app update or maybe I can’t do notes or something - but at least I would be able to actually use the app!

NYT decided I don’t deserve access to content that I’m paying for as a subscriber. As a long time All-Access subscriber, I thoroughly enjoy the NYT Cooking app. I use a 6th Generation iPad to view the recipes while I cook. Their most recent update blocks me out of the app on this device, with a pop up saying “Update the app to continue.” The new app requires iOS 18. My 6th Generation iPad tops out at iPadOS Version 17.7.11, so I cannot update the app. Annoying, but no big deal since I can still access content on my browser, right? Wrong- clicking on a recipe in my browser simply redirects me back to the app, which prompts me to update! So NYT is basically telling me that I, a paying customer, can’t access the content that I’m paying for.

I have to buy a new iPad to use!!. Upgrade requires the latest operating system!!

I can’t use it since the most recent update.. I have 17.7.1 on my iPad and can’t update any further; the update of the NYT Cooking wants version IOS 18.0. I’m S. O. L. and will have to cancel my NYTimes Cooking subscription. I’m so bummed out. This app has been such a joy. Goodbye, NYTIMES.

HATE the new update!. FOR YEARS, I have relied on the NYTimes cooking app for its easy-to-read recipes. I have bad eyes and I used to LOVE the “start cooking” button that gave me a big, full screen read out of the recipe ingredients and instructions. The recent, June 9?, change is awful. It renders the app virtually unusable for me, even with the largest font size selected. Improve your accessibility features. No one wants to put on their reading glasses to read a recipe.

You updated right out of the app!. I use this app all the time! But now, I can’t anymore, because my iPad can’t be updated to the version your new app requires! Boy am I bummed. Can’t you leave the previous version available, even give it a different name or something for those of us who do not want to buy a new device just to use NYT Cooking that we have already paid for?

Doesn’t support iPadOS 17.7.11. Sadly this great app no longer supports iPadOS 17.

Not usable by all NYT paying subscribers. why would you design an update that only works for some paid New York Times subscribers and not others. I can use all of the other New York Times apps just fine on my iOS devices. They all seem to be working properly with iOS version 17.X, but the New York Times cooking app was updated 2 days ago to require iOS version 18 minimally. So though I am paying for this app essentially in my subscription fees, I can no longer use it on my iOS based devices since my hardware maxes out at iOS17. You didn’t quite think this through, did you alleged “professional” UX designers and developers at the NYT being paid to do such tasks. Nope. you just assumed everybody is using XYZ operating system and has sufficient income to just buy new sh- to support your frankly amateurism. Can you take criticism, NYT UI/UX folks? We shall see…

Great App that I can’t use anymore. Thanks to your new update requiring iOS 18, I can no longer use this app on my perfectly functional iPad Pro. Apple won’t let me update my iOS and now I can’t use one of my favorite apps. You’ve lost a customer by contributing to Apple’s programmed obsolescence.

not feeling it. It’s nice to have an updated app but not when it makes a device unusable. I’ve had it with incessant and unwanted updates that don’t bring value or enjoyment to the experience. It’s like an article I read where you need to install an update in order to get a kettle to boil water. Time to go back to paper cookbooks.

No longer available. Unfortunately as a result of the recent update I can’t use the app anymore. It requires me to update my phone and operating system and get a new phone.

Saved recipes/notes now held hostage!!!!. I’ve been using this app for several years as an aspect of our subscription but suddenly my recipe box has disappeared along with the often detailed notes I have added. Nothing changed with our NYT subscription but now all my labor is lost unless we pony up another $40 for a separate subscription. I get that newspapers are in trouble, but this was a sleazy action. No doubt it will be $60 next year and $80 the year after. So consider carefully before you trust this app with your notes (and your money).

Another NYT App that Doesn’t Work for Old IPads. Yet again, the NYT has decided to lock out paying customers from using apps because of old iPads that don’t support iOS 18. Why? Are the updated apps really that much better? Truly ridiculous.

So disappointed!. I love the NYT cooking app and used it all the time until the most recent update. Now, because I have an older iPad , I can no longer access it! I pay for a subscription and think it’s very unfair to shut out those of us who choose not to constantly update our devices. What I already have works fine for me, but the NYT cooking app does not!

New OS 18 requirement has locked me out. I’m a long-time subscriber to the NYT and it’s Cooking app. Now that the cooking app requires OS18 (I have the latest for my iPad which is OS 17.7.11) I can no longer access new recipes nor the MANY ones I’ve saved over the years. What short-sidedness on the Cooking app IT people. And, no, I'm not in a position to purchase a new iPad. 😠

Buggy. This used to work great but now I can’t open recipes. Emailed help several times to no avail. Going to unsubscribe.

NYT Cooking No Longer Available to this Subscriber. Since the Times updated its Cooking App requiring an IOS 18 or higher, I am unable to access the app because my device is older and only has a 17.7. I cannot upgrade my device as it is not supported. I am considering dropping the subscription altogether just because of this. I can not afford to buy a newer device just because the Times decided to up the ante.

No longer supports iOS less than 18. So I pay to have All Access but NYT decides my iPad is too old? This sucks and is so unfair. C’mon, NYT - make the necessary changes to include older devices. I love the Cooking app, but I don’t have either the $$ or the need to buy a new device. You are going to lose many friends with this upgrade.

No changes to the app for 5 years since my initial review.. 5 years ago I wrote my review and nothing has changed: freezes, crashes, inability to save recipes off line are still there. They really do not care. Recipes are great, the app is absolutely unsatisfactory. 2021 review: Terrible app. Stalls all the time. Unable to access recipes in the areas with poor cell phone reception. Unable to use recipe box when off line. Whole foods and TJ have notoriously poor cell phone reception in the Bay area. So, there is no way to use this app when shopping in any of these stores.

Now requires iOS 18. NY Times continues to cheat paying subscribers who have older devices out of access to this app and their other resources. This is just pathetic for an organization that claims to be a leading voice in our democracy.
