   Awful experience. I installed Crouton on my MacBook M2 running Tahoe 26.5.1 and tried to manually enter a recipe. I first tried to give the recipe a name but I couldn’t type into that box. I thought, maybe there has to be an actually recipe before I can give it a name, so I typed in the ingredients and the steps and tried again. Still couldn’t type in the Recipe Name box. I tried saving it but couldn’t without giving it a name. This really looks like an IOS app that was ported to macOS without rigorous testing. I’ve uninstalled it.

   Subscription required to import recipes. I’m on the plus version and I can’t import recipes from simple text files (markdown) or pdf’s unless I pay for a subscription. Pdf’s might be trickier but a markdown or text file, really? I understand subscriptions when there are server costs involved but for things that are easily processed on-device it’s just unacceptable, especially when a “plus” version has already been purchased.

   Desktop app leaves much to be desired. - Can’t zoom recipe - no keyboard shortcuts - small windows for editing recipes just more cumbersome to use than iOS apps

   Missing features. to the best of my knowledge, still no way to bulk delete recipes. When importing from another app, categories / folders do not sync.

   Crouton: Recipe Manager. I love most parts of crouton. Now that I have quite a few recipes saved it lags quite a bit. The grocery list adds things separately instead of combining ingredients for the grocery list. And each ingredient that’s on the grocery list should also tell What recipe it’s coming from, if that makes any sense. 01.18.26 Just updated my iPad and the app won’t even open. I pad has iPadOS 26.2 on it. Also I’m not able to she crouton with anybody that doesn’t have an Apple device.

   Let me rate recipes!. Please just give me the ability to rate recipes, mark recipies as “cooked” easily and mark recipies as “want to cook” easily 😭 then this app would be perfect I wish it would have the simplicity of the New York Times cooking recipie box. Where a recipe that’s been cooked, in your recipies list maybe has a green checkmark or something and you easily can select “cooked” from the top of your recipies. Automatically recipies are marked as cooked and maybe even log the times an dates when the recipies was cooked or cooked again so you can do stuff like see what you’ve cooked the most of when you’ve cooked something before and add ratings each time and maybe notes and tweaks

   You can only have 5 recipes for free. Had this been known up front I wouldn’t have even bothered downloading and wasting my time. 5 recipes is pointless

   How to get support. I have a plus subscription for this app but cannot use the camera to scan a recipe. The link to the support website has no contact information but nothing happens when I click the link; so here I am.

    not good. I signed up for the monthly payment and the app works as if it is the free version which limits the amount of recipes I can have. It no longer allows me to download recipes from the web.

    A cobbled mess. The app fails more than it functions. The developer Devin focuses on new flashy features instead of polishing the existing rough edges that are laden with bugs. To name just a few, the settings back button vanishes at will, recipes rarely add via URL, the groceries creates a new list in Reminders each time it syncs, recipe images go missing, and scaling a recipe struggles to recognize fractional measurements. Add to this the developer bleeds you with pricing separating critical functions into not one but TWO in-app purchases. I can't defend this app anymore.

    Useless App. Totally most useless free version app.You only get 1 recipe for the free version and you need to get the subscription to see the other recipes. There isn’t even a trial to see if it works for you or not. This could have been a direct paid app instead of paying inside the app. The free version is just calendar with your meal plan which you can have it on your calendar.

    Won’t refund. I purchased the “one time app purchase” which did not state that it wouldn’t have all features. I went to settings after noticing i didn’t have full “privileges” and realized you have to buy the annual subscription to get all features. I requested a refund for the original purchase (the full app one time purchase) and proceeded to purchase the annual plan. Well they’re refusing the refund me my original purchase claiming I don’t “qualify” for a refund. The annual subscription covers everything the one time app fee covers plus all the extras. So I feel very shafted. NOT happy and will not be continuing my service.

    Features I purchased in the past now no longer available. I was happy to move to this app when I purchased this in the past. I was able to take photos of recipes and these would be smartly added via OCR. Was happy and decided to move from Paprika. However, tried to use the same feature only to find out that you now needed to pay extra (again!) via subscription. Felt like a bait and switch tactic. Please bring back the features we paid for, otherwise, might as well use Apple notes if that’s the case.

    Deceiving and Lies. There was a buy-once-get-every-feature in-app purchase that was supposed to support the developer and unlock all features. Great! I loath subscriptions and don’t want to rent my software. So I gladly paid for it. Now there’s an *additional* purchase that’s a subscription that is actually supposed unlock all features! Deceptive, tricky and uncalled for. How long until all new, and potentially existing, features are locked behind the rental, I mean, subscription offering? I’m sure the developer will find an excuse (or not). There’s zero recourse for me as I can’t request a refund anymore. But, please stay away from this deceptive developer and avoid this app entirely. The developer *will* change the deal and there’s nothing you’ll be able to do. Don’t take this developer on their words, judge them by their actions, and so far they’ve deceived and lied. Don’t let them trick you the same they tricked me.

    Deceiving. I paid for the premium subscription thinking I was getting everything unlocked, but nope! They have a paid subscription within a paid subscription and I didn’t understand that at first. So now I just wasted money on an app that isn’t even giving me the features I wanted and thought I was paying for. So basically wasted money because I still don’t have the features I actually wanted and I’m not about to give them even more money at this point. What a waste.

    could not import recipes. There is no information about how to import recipes. They are supposed to auto add from websites. I tried everything I could think of and nothing worked. Pretty useless if I can't add recipes into it without hand typing every one. Might as well just book mark them and skip the app.

    Want to like it but. I had submitted a different review about how great the app is, but then I ran into a big issue with iCloud sync with the paid version removing recipes to “sync” with the new device. Sadly, a fatal issue on top of no custom items and I really wanted to like this app

    Has potential but no bulk import. This app is better thought through than many, but I already have ~100recipes saved in other platforms. I can export them as PDFs, but Crouton can only import 1 recipe at a time, and each one takes a minute or two to process... and you have to sit there and wait for it to finish each one. It would take many hours of tedious work to transition to it. Too bad, really. Many good ideas in the app.

    Nice looks, pity about high pressure sales tactic.. I’m sure it’s a nice app, and they do a great job with staying current with Apple’s design ethos, but I hate, hate, HATE being pressured into decision-making such as Crouton’s offering a discount if I purchase the full version within the first 24 hours of downloading. Good apps can stand on their own merits. Also, importing recipes turned out to be more of a pain than I expected due to Crouton reading my “2-1/4” that I do for readability as “a range from two to one-fourth” rather than “two and one fourth”. Paprika may be showing its age, but at least it understands what I mean when I scale recipes without having to manually convert to “2¼”.

    Great app except….. This is one of the best apps I’ve purchased. I love it! However, it used to sync between all my family members and no longer does. It used to be much better for this reason.

    Bring your visa card. I don’t mind paying for apps but i wish they had said this app is worthless unless you pay our subscription fee. I was looking for a simple app to put a few recipes in for easy keeping. They have great tools for transferring from print to app but on the pay tiers. The manual entry was free but, unbeknownst to me, after a few it won’t let you do that anymore. I’d do better for my purposes on the Notes app I guess.

    It has potential to be a great app. This is by far the most aesthetically pleasing recipe management app I've seen. It's super clean and has some great functionality like simple importing from websites, keeping the ingredients visible at all times when in a recipe, timer setting in the recipe step that calls for any amount of time, etc. I love all of those things. Some of the problems I've encountered are: - To add multiple tags to a recipe, you have to hold Command and click on the tags you want, which I've never seen on tag selection options in other apps - Along the same lines, when you select multiple recipes, you have to hold Command and click on them. Even though the interface brings up check boxes to the left of the recipes, they act like radio buttons, selecting only one object. If you click on another one, it deselects the last one. You shouldn't have to hold Command to select multiple recipes - You can't select multiple recipes when you do a search through all the recipes. It will pull up the recipes that match your search, but you can't select all of them and add a tag or batch move them to a folder. - If you try to use the Command F shortcut to search for recipes, there is no way to return to your list of all recipes. You just have to quit the app and open it back up again. - The iCloud syncing for families is pretty slow or doesn't work at all. My wife still has folders showing up in her account that I deleted months ago. I feel like these issues should be pretty simple to resolve, but they make the user experience absolutely miserable. I've taken it for granted that other apps and websites get things like this right, and this app just messes all of them up. If these issues are fixed, I'd be willing to change my rating to 5 stars

    Used to be great. This used to be a great app and I used it all the time! Now it doesn’t pull recipes from websites correctly (e.g. if the recipe says “1 and 1/2 cups” it will only pull 1/2 cup). So now I can pretty much only use it as storage for links to recipes, not the recipes themselves, because I have to double check them all for errors. Great idea, poor usability, unfortunately.

    Sold out, full of ads, features removed. Used to be a good app. I purchased one time to support a small independent developer. Now a few months later it’s the same old story, nothing but ads and moved to a subscription model. Removed features my wife relied on like converting photos to recipes. So much for supporting “the little guy” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Crouton Feature Confusion. Initial app install is Crouton Companion. If one desires to use an actual meal planner and such, one is advised to select Crouton +….then Crouton Discover…additional pay for each. I believe I opted in for both for iOS. Using my iPad now and there appears to be another pay and pay for + and Discover. Will look at billing history and likely request refund or correction. Just offer Companion and other with one pay!

    Needs more time to improve. Weekly meal planning is one of the more time-consuming items for me. I purchased this app because it promised to auto generate meal plans, which would solve my problem. While true, the auto generator seems to be a random recipe selector with no obvious way to tune how it formulates the recommendations. Ultimately this created more work for me as I had to swap out several of its recommendations. I was holding out that maybe this app would improve in this area overtime, and it may still, but seeing as newer features are locked away behind a subscription, it seems unwise to spend more money in the hope it’ll get better.
