Failed in the middle of hike. Such a great idea so I decided to try this app out. Unfortunately, it just stopped tracking me in the middle of my Grand Canyon rim2rim hike. Not sure why this happened since I never let my battery die. I guess it was too good to be true. Subscription ended.

  2. ★★★★негативный опыт без конкретной причины· без конкретики

Used to be my go to. Suddenly crashes constantly in offline mode. Moved on to better free apps because of this issue taking me by surprise in the backcountry. Luckily I had paper map backups!

  3. ★★★★негативный опыт без конкретной причины· без конкретики

Mostly useless. Good idea but, as of 17 Jun 18, it sends a map to your safety circle of cell phone coverage instead of actual locations. It records actual locations (and consumes significant power) but doesn’t send them. This app could work for you if you hike in areas with at least partial cell phone coverage but for me it is mostly useless.

Can't use - App crashes constantly. Great concept but I can't use the app without it crashing.

  5. ★★★★негативный опыт без конкретной причины· без конкретики

Doesn't work. This app worked in the beginning but then it didn't. Quits recording my hike while I'm hiking. Even with no obstructions. I cannot recommend this app because this has happened 70% of the time. Very frustrating.

Off grid and out of luck. I tried to plot some points in my land. All of a sudd it thought I was miles away. I expected an on phone app with downloaded map to perform better Just need to mark on map the location of my parcel corners.

Missing a lot of trails. Purchased the subscription to use for my upcoming trip to Death Valley and the trail I need isn’t listed. Downloaded Gaia and AllTrails and they both had it. Second time I was unable to use Cairn since I had it because the trail was missing. Works nicely when they have the trail available.

Great App, but with Serious Considerations. My wife is an avid hiker, goes at least weekly, so when we saw this app we thought it would be a great way to communicate with me while she was gone. We find Cairn to be AMAZINGLY accurate; more so than ANY other app or software we've ever seen or tried. And by "AMAZINGLY" I mean it seems to be accurate within a meter or two of actual location which, for a free or almost free app, is "amazing". The serious consideration is that this level of accuracy requires constant feedback from her phone to whatever satellite it's communicating with, and her phone was almost dead by the end of a 3-4 hour hike. It can normally go 24 hours without charging; longer if you really need it to and cut down on games and texts and such. My concern is: while the accuracy is great, does it do much good if it drains the "location device" in the process? I hope Cairn knows about this issue and is working on something, because it really is a wonderful app. I would definitely recommend it, but would also recommend thinking about purchasing a battery backup device for serious hikers.

Hmmmmm. Very interesting idea. However when creating an app whose purpose is largely to notify an emergency network of your status - why in hell would you force someone to pick a short list of return times versus entering any time you want? On a recent 28mile hike I had to pick 3pm or 7pm when I expected to be back at 4pm. My network received an email I was overdue @3pm (alternative being potentially levying dead in woods 3hrs). What?!

Peace of mind. Cairn provides peace of mind for family when I’m hiking. The ability to “queue” messages until cell signal is established works well in areas of poor coverage. I’d give it 5 stars but the most recent version pulled the Watch app which I found really handy for sending updates.

Track. It’s not possible to import a saved track

  12. ★★★★общая положительная оценка· без конкретики

Peace of Mind. With loved ones that worry about me this is perfect. Ability to track, send alerts and check-in, and even work in areas with weak/spotty coverage make this one of the best trackers. Being able to download maps ahead of time is great.

Review On Cairn. So I just started on Cairn and it seems to work well and is a good choice for travel.

  15. ★★★★★стабильная и надёжная работа

Review. An absolute must-have app for solo hikers. The automatic notification system gives my family so much peace of mind because they know they'll be alerted with my last known GPS location if I'm overdue coming off the trail. I especially love the crowdsourced cell coverage mapping feature—it makes finding a signal patch in the middle of nowhere so much easier. The offline maps are clear, reliable, and don't completely kill my battery. Highly recommended

Perfect for More than Hiking. I downloaded this app for hiking and tracking my path. I realized it is great for sharing your location with family and friends too. It will allow for tracking. You can also download a map of the place you are going to plan out your path.

Used Carin for years. I’ve used this app for I think about five years, all four seasons. Whether I’m hiking in the summer with my dog or splitboarding in the winter, this app has been awesome. I love being able to track my roots, elevation gain and time. highly recommend for any outdoor enthusiast.

Love the Cairn app!. I have a history of a heart attack so the feature that lets my loved ones know about my travel plans is really helpful

  19. ★★★★★общая положительная оценка· без конкретики

Safety!. We had many deaths on the trails this year due to heat, no cell service, and a snake bite. I love that this app shows where cell service is available and notifies my family where I am.

  20. ★★★★★гибкие настройки под свой сценарий

Surprised more hikers don’t use this!. I use a satellite communicator but wanted something that friends who don’t have one can use to notify their family as they hike or hunt or horseback ride which is what we do. If you begin your trip where there is cell service, this app will continue to work even if you go out of cell service! Also, SUPER great is you can try this app for free for 30 days with full Premium features enabled and no credit card needed. So with that, I say download the app and try it out. Even though we use a satellite communicator too, this app is well worth the $26 per year to keep track of your hike every few minutes and send it to your safety circle back home and they can watch your progress and know if your back safely or not. I am so surprised more people don’t use this. This is even great for our teen drivers when they go out with friends, it sends report every 30 minutes or so via text or email. You set it up how you want. Super recommend this trail safety app.

Best outdoor safety app. After using several other outdoor apps throughout the years I’m finally settling on Cairn. Why it’s my favorite: 1. The safety features, when outdoors I don’t want to spend a ton of time on my phone except for photos and safety. Cairn has the right balance between engaging me when needed and not being too busy or distracting. It works well in the background to track and communicate my trip plans, location, battery life, and status to mom. It’s not the only safety tool but an important one. 2. The maps are great and good value for being able to download for offline. 3. Real-time ETA rocks. I like to see time, distance, elevation left and Cairn performs magic here. My state WA has a ton of trail coverage. Outside of the US, trails in the app are limited for ETA and stats, but app still seems to show most of worldwide trails on the map when zooming in.

Great and useful app. Great app to keep track of your distance , elevation and duration

AWESOME App!. I’ve been using this app while hiking overseas and it’s fabulous! I don’t have too many worries about getting lost, since I can download offline maps, and it lets my family keep up on what I’m doing. I most definitely recommend the cairnapp!

Good for worried parent. My daughter lives in Australia and I live in the US. I’m in her safety circle and can track her progress real time with this app. Recently, I was tracking her progress and saw that she hadn’t reached her destination on the trail. I was able to check her battery life and see that her battery had run out which accounted for her lack of progress. Highly recommend this app for hikes.

Region dependent. Great for Washington state. Outside of that I’ve been disappointed with trail options. Also lacks ability to really define your own trails. However the Cell-service breadcrumbs are awesome for seasonal trails that have a different winter route than summer route.

  26. ★★★★★понятный и удобный сценарий

Hiking Safety GPS. This is a cool app, originally downloaded for cell coverage on hikes but really hooked on safety tracking. So easy to use and all WA trails are accurate used on Mt Rainier recently, able to use the ETA to decide when to turn around. Overall my favorite navigation hike.

Awesome map/GPS app for hikers. This is a great app for hikers and backpackers. It’s easy to use. You can download maps so you can use them even when you are off-line. It uses the GPS chip in your phone so you can determine your location on the map. It helps you find places with cell phone signal if you need it. And it gives you an easy way to notify a circle of friends of where you are going and when you expect to be back. It notifies them if you are overdue, and you can check in to let them know that you returned safely. I use this on all my solo hikes.

Favorite Backpacking App. I love this app. Got hooked on this during the 30 day free trial. The GPS and maps are easy to read. When I type in the trail it shows up immediately, I can see trail stats, the route, and my ETA. Recently used on a 3 day backpacking trip of the Appalachian Trail and only had to charge battery once. Cairn works best in low power mode and doesn’t drain power like other outdoor apps. The best part is the safety features where friends and family can track me on my hike. Overall well worth the $27 a year.

Peace of mind on hikes n runs. I came across this app from the local news and decided to give it a try. It's very easy to let family know where I'm going, allow them to track me, and sends out alerts with instructions when overdue. I now use it on all hike and trail runs in the wilderness. The ETA and GPS are very accurate and even used The cell coverage points to find a signal to send text messages off the grid. When I tell my family that I'm planning a hike they usually respond with don't forget to send a Cairn.

Favorite for hiking and walks. A friend told me about Cairn as I walk my dog on trails alone and wanted a way for husband to track me. Looked into SPOT but it was too expensive and usually go nearby. Cairn is a great app that gives me offline maps, shows the trail, and safety tracking. The performance is fast, even when there is no signal. We also have started using on international trips, last to to Thailand. Overall great value and design works well. Please add SOS feature.
