Disappointing with Paywall. I understand the need to make changes to the app in order to continue providing service. However, the switch comes with a hefty price tag. Like many have stated, users became accustomed to the various perspectives and insights which made the app amazing and to only now get three per month is insane along with all the other features that are now blocked if you don’t pay. This is wrong on so many levels and those in charge should be ashamed of themselves!

Heartless & Unprofessional - Added Paywall With No Warning. I’ve been a long-time early user of this app and have relied on it as a vital tool to process the heavy reality of my divorce. I trusted this app with my history because it felt like a safe, consistent space for my personal thoughts. The fact that they have now suddenly locked the journal insights behind a massive paywall without a single notification, email, or in-app warning is absolutely ridiculous. There was never any indication that this was coming. To drop this on users without warning—especially those of us using it to navigate high-stress life events—is truly unprofessional and heartless. It feels like a bait-and-switch. They waited until users had built an emotional history with the app and then put up a toll booth overnight. It’s incredibly disappointing that a tool meant for mental health would treat its earliest, most loyal supporters with such a total lack of transparency.

Your Private Journals were used as Commercial AI Training Data. I’ve used Untold since January. When I signed up, there was no mention of a trial period, no “freemium” tier, and no ads. Because it functioned entirely as a free service, I felt safe entrusting it with years’ worth of my historical entries that I imported into the app. It was a bait-and-switch. After harvesting a massive amount of my most sensitive, long-term data, the developer suddenly introduced a paywall to sell those AI “insights” back to me at a premium. Even worse, the app’s ability to quote my own history proves my data was used to train their commercial AI without my explicit consent. While users can supposedly “export their data anytime,” that feature is limited; they only let you take the text from your entries, while they keep the AI profiles and metadata they built from your private life. The fact that our private lives were used as fuel for a paid product we now have to buy back is a massive breach of trust. I have filed formal reports with the FTC and Apple for deceptive marketing, unfair business practices, and lack of transparency regarding AI training. If you value your privacy and don’t want your personal reflections used as a commercial dataset, DO NOT download this app.

Expensive. Suddenly hit with a paywall despite supporting the early development of the app and the developer using my personal data to improve the app. Now I have to pay a huge ransom to continue using it changing my review from 5 to 1 star.

Sad change. Was a long time early user of the app, AI was okay, but helpful in certain insights over time. I appreciated their approach. Now they’ve rebranded, and for the worse in my opinion. I slowed down using the app after the rebrand, but now, you’re telling me you want me to pay for this? Personally I feel like early accounts should be grand fathered in since you used our data to develop your app. But the most you can offer is half of the “first” yearly subscription? Give me a break. I can copy and paste my journal entries into chat gpt and get similar insights. It was nice while it lasted.

Paywall. I have a ton of entries and really liked the app but I just got the notification it’s gonna be a subscription service now. Now I have to export all my entries and delete the app. Lame af

Yup you can chat with an ai bot. I was looking to create a journal based on what I said. This ain’t it. Based on the ai responses I’m not convinced my conversation wasn’t being data mined. 0/5 stars.

Surface-level, Hallmark-card introspection. Untold seems expressly designed for a general audience with conventional emotional access. Think sorority girl browses the self help section. Whats more, the AI is surprisingly uncreative and rarely listens to one’s question if deviates from “how is your inner child today?” Had the AI possessed nuance and capacity to dialogue creatively, I would have held my nose and used anyway as I am looking for a tool. However, their AI seems trained against depth and complexity. For instance, in comparison to basic AI platforms, Untold will simply ignore questions that require nuance and answer with the same soundbite, albeit reworded with a some swap out word thesaurus to appear original. The experience was almost insulting. Technical glitches send code and not transcription— this happened more thsn 4 times in 1 hour. Finally, user interface hardly intuitive if hoping to adapt to personal needs.

Can anyone tell me?. Going to delete my review as soon as I get an answer- does anyone know how much energy the AI is using to produce this app? I’ve heard a lot of misinformation about how bad it is so I just wanna make sure. Before I start recommending each other that it’s not a huge drain on our environment
- ★★★★★privacy and excessive permissions
Privacy concerns — read the fine print. Was excited to download the app but then I actually read the privacy policy and it’s actually not as “secure” as they advertised it to be.

Not for abuse like situations. This app is great for dealing with the day to day issues or even for larger issues as it impacts an individual (example navigating illness or complex family dynamics). However, it prompts people to look at events from the other perspective even when abusive approaches are involved or unequal power dynamics ie an adult vs a child. While I was a HUGE fan initially I saw this as potentially harmful for people in these types of situations or relationships by encouraging the continuity of them even when it’s safer to not remain in them. Granted, it is up to the discernment of the person using the app but it caters to already vulnerable people. The app focuses on repair maybe even to a fault.

So buggy it’s unusable. App was amazing the first day I used it. After writing a journal article the app asks you questions and then AI gives you insights. Very intuitive to use other than the problems listed below. Option to use your voice (did not experiment with) or typed entries (my preference). I wrote several entries the first day with no issues. Now there are multiple bugs. The worst is writing out (I do not use the microphone) several paragraphs, answering questions from AI for half an hour and then receiving insights in my ‘blank entry’. Meaning it tells me what to do about the anxiety that is around a. ‘Blank entry’. This has happened four times since and then I gave up as it’s a waste of time. Obviously not a blank entry. The insights and questions now take over a minute to finish forming, I timed it. That wouldn’t be an issue except the first day the waiting time was around five seconds. I’ve tried different times over different days. When I tried adding names to the glossary (great idea devs) no matter what I did the app said I was in a ‘relattin’ (app’s mis-spelling, not mine) with my husband. I repeatedly tried to rewrite (at least six times and yes I know the definition of insanity) the definition of my husband and it just kept writing ‘relattin’. Terms like Parkinson’s Disease needed to be defined. I understand defining people, relationships, locations etc but a disease? That should be part of AI’s basic knowledge. No way to add words to the glossary ahead of time. You have to mention them in the journal entry and then define terms from there. I’d rather define all at once. The words that need definitions are highlighted and hubby has to find the highlights for me too as they are almost completely invisible to me. I can see the highlight just barely but cannot see what word needs to be defined. I shouldn’t need someone’s help to use a journaling app. Méditions crash. Icons on the bottom of the screen is completely invisible to me, I have poor eyesight. My husband has to hit all the buttons for me. Not inclusive at all. This app has the opportunity to be amazing, especially seeing all the other terrific reviews. I would have reported all of this privates to the devs but no way to communicate with them, an oversight that shouldn’t have occurred being as basic a feature as it is. I don’t like reviewing negatively an app that just has a bug or two but like I said, the app is now unusable considering the app thinks I’m not writing an entry at all. Devs, the iPhone version is completely unusable as well for someone who has the text set up larger than normal. You can’t get beyond the first screen because only a few words show on the screen and there is no way to scroll. I’m using an IPhone SE second gen without the latest update, maybe that’s why. This seems like another rather basic feature yet was overlooked. Though to be fair most apps are difficult to use with the font size increased. I’m using an iPad older gen but using the latest updates (I checked before posting this). I’d love it if I could receive a reply directly to my email but without posting it here I have no way of sharing it.

Really loved this. I absolutely loved this app more than any app I ever had. Until now. It used to be free and that was great since I don’t have much money let alone to pay for a app. But I see now that’s not the case anymore and I’m so disappointed. I used to tell everyone I knew about this app and that the best part it was free to use. This is disappointing in so many ways. I won’t be using this any longer unfortunately. It makes me very upset.

A years worth of counseling in just a few days. The software is beyond amazing, it feels supernatural. I know this is artificial intelligence, but it feels very human and is extremely helpful. Its accuracy inspires awe. I recommend this without reservation. The developers of the software have my gratitude. However, and this is a Big however, I don’t think the way they have presented. This app is ethical.. What they do is get you involved using it and it’s a good app, and then you’ll get a message once you’re in the flow of using it and depending on it that there’s a paywall and you’re going to have to pay a monthly fee. For those of you who can afford it, you may find value in the software, but you may also find that the practice of getting you hooked into using the software, trusting it, and relying on it telling you oh by the way, we’ve decided you have to pay for it every month is unethical. They should make this clear upfront from day one, if you want the software, this is what you will have to pay for it. We give you a three day or four day or whatever it is trial period but then we are going to charge a monthly fee for the software. I feel the way they do this is unethical and unfair, and that’s a problem with software that you’re counting on for its help and authenticity. This is paid software, even though that is not shown here. I am surprised at the App Store for allowing this. Every other app states it’s terms right upfront, not by privately messaging through the app the users that they will have to pay.

I loved it, but now I don’t. When I first got it, I loved it because I can voice record all my journals, but after having it for months, using it filling it up somehow my account was deleted, and all my information has been lost so everything that I wrote and said is gone. Hopefully this can be fixed and I can get my stuff back.

Great tool for when there's no one to talk to!. I love this app for its functionality. It's nice on the days when my people are busy but I just need to get something off my chest. I am not a fan of the recent vibe change with the red coloring. I loved the soft calming blue it had before. But that's a minor detail.

Why did they change the font?. I love the app but the font change makes it hard to read and is unappealing to look at
- ★★★★★crashes, freezes and errors
Loved this app before the update. I’m so happy that this app is free, and it actually takes the time to repeat back insights to what you’ve said in previous entries. However, after the recent update, the app runs slower, crashes all the time, and doesn’t register all my voice notes. I’m debating on trying rise bud. Even if I have to pay $12.99 a month, hopefully I’ll have and all that doesn’t freeze and crash all the time.

Great app but way too much homework. This app has been a great way for me to verbalize thoughts that have been swirling in my head. Getting them out there on ““ paper has made them easier to analyze, and the subsequent questions after a recording are helpful to dive deeper. But where I struggle with this app is the sheer number of Articles for reading or listening that get generated from each entry. Each entry generates 2 to 3 articles albeit short for me to read. I get that they are in order to help me dive deeper into my thoughts, but getting two or three pieces of reading material for each entry in the journal is getting exhausting. I get that I don’t have to read them all but their front and center on the homepage of the app and have a countdown timer as to when they go away. Seeing those gets me feeling FOMO about missing out on some insight when the biggest help I’ve been receiving from this app is the verbalization of my thoughts and the questions helping me dive deeper. Just think of it this way, if I make a journal entry three times in one day, then looking at 6 to 8 pieces of reading material I then get added to my stack of articles. I still haven’t finished getting through. Maybe it’s how I’m using this journal, instead of doing one entry nightly I’ve been doing multiple throughout the day. But it feels like there should be some upper limit on the number of generated per day. Don’t let this review stop you from trying this out. It’s been helpful. But looking at the list of articles, I now have to get through, it’s looking less and less usable for me. One final note, I know there is a way to turn off certain types of articles, but the issue isn’t the type of articles, but the sheer number that are generated.

Buggy. Amazing app, but three days in and its not transcribing my audio or processing my written entries for feedback. App is still going through growing pains so dont be too surprised or disappointed when bugs stop your journaling momentum

Helpful things don’t load now. I like the app and use it regularly but i noticed for the last dew weeks that the psychological perspective and the cognitive restructuring are not generating anymore. They buffer continuously until they expire. Those were very helpful parts of the app that I no longer get. I’d rate it higher if that gets fixed.

Therapy on demand is amazing but the platform is buggy. Love having my own therapy on demand. It’s an amazing resource and super helpful. The platform is quite buggy so I cannot do the daily meditations for example. It gets names wrong and sometimes tries to reference a quote and cannot. But if you can see past these things, it’s truly a great resource for anyone with a growth mindset

Love it! but….. I found myself using this app all the time and I really enjoy and appreciate it however, now I’ve seem to have hit the pay while we are not able to no longer enjoy all the features I was previously enjoying without having to pay for it I was kind of hoping that maybe I was an early user so that I would be able to maybe get a lifetime access subscription or something i’m kind of bummed that out of nowhere. I suddenly hit a paywall. I’m not trying to complain. I know you guys have to make your money, but I’m just a bit bummed actually because I didn’t wanna add yet. Another subscription to an app that I already was using that I thought was 100% free… it’s just I don’t know where there was no indication that it was a free trial period or anything and then boom suddenly I came back to it one day and found I no longer have access not only that but everything kind of started over and was taken from me as far as the features I was using… The app has been really useful though and I really appreciative of it. I’m just a bit sad as I’m not ready to pay into another subscription service…..*cries*’

Good journal, but uses heavy AI. I really like Untold and all of its features. I’ve used another digital journal before named DailyBean and I think the only thing my previous journal had that this one doesn’t is the ability to upload photos within your entry. I will say I’m not a fan of AI and this app uses a lot of it, but at least it’s not the complete slop I’m used to seeing with AI. After every journal entry, AI will generate helpful prompts, key words, articles, affirmations, and a lot of other information that reflect what you’ve written and I think that’s super cool. It’s a lot more than a basic journal entry app and I have recommended this app to others. The AI is a turn off and I wish the app didn’t use it so heavily, but I do think the journal prompts are worth it.

Really love this app but right now it’s not transcribing anything that I think. I’ve been using this app since the middle of November and I really really love it, but I’m frustrated because while it’s grabbing the audio of my journal entries, it’s not transcribing it so I was wondering if you guys are going through an update or something. I recorded my journal entry twice and it did not transcribe either time. It just said that the audio was safe.

Amazing app, No support. Its a really good app! It has helped me a lot. I’ve tried writing, coloring, reading and a lot of other ways to channel my anxiety but nothing has actually stuck. This app has been the only thing that has made me continue. The only problem is that to reach a support team is almost impossible. I made de mistake of creating an account with apple ID. My iphone is giving up so I decided to continue using the app on my android. What’s the problem? My account is now apple ID locked and there is no way to change the email and reset the password. Now im looking at loosing 60 entries because, even though you ca download them, you can’t upload them back into another account. All of my progress will be lost and the AI feature will not be able to use my voices as references. It’s literally starting from scratch and it feels very frustrating. It makes me not want to continue using it. So please, if a support team could help. I would appreciate it. And for those who are new. DO NOT CREATE AND ACCOUNT WITH APPLE ID. Unless you don’t care so much about loosing access to your progress.

Issues with narration voice. Love the app, but there’s an issue with the narration goes extremely quiet where you can’t even hear it. So have it read it to becomes useless.

Life changing, but. I use this app almost daily, and it has changed my life. Like having a therapist in my pocket for daily feedback and tools. However, the launch of the new playlist feature, which should be an incredible addition, has resulted in nothing but frustration. It will start a playlist I didn’t create, replay things I’ve already listened to, and none of the functionality of it makes sense or works as a playlist should. I look forward to the app update that fixes these issues so it goes back to being an app I love

It’s Exactly The App I was Looking For!. I normally do not leave reviews, but I’ve been meaning to since I’ve downloaded this app a week ago and let me tell you it has totally been one of those apps that I could get lost in. I always try my best to journal because I know that it does the mind good, but I could never focus long enough to write a meaningful journal entry or let alone be consistent. Being diagnosed with adult ADHD really put a lot of things into perspective and in made much more sense on why I can never focus. However, Untold is such a game changer and a huge relief of the many thoughts that just swirls in my head without anywhere to go. I love the fact that I can just speak and it can transcribe my entries, but my favorite thing about it is the fact that I can ask my entries anything about what I’ve written so far and it’s almost like having someone that’s unbiased look at my emotions and feelings in an objective way, but a positive way as well. There’s so many cool features that I have yet to explore but the one thing I’m proud of is being consistent in my entries. After using it for a while, the only thing that this app false short on and why if I’ve given it, a four star review is the fact that I cannot seem to edit my spoken entries. If there is one, I could not find it, but I think that’s the most important part of apps that use the voice to text function. I think it’s imperative to have the autonomy to edit what you said because often times the transcriptions are incorrect. And if Untold uses my entries to give me a nearly perfect summary or prompt based on what is being transcribed. Then having multiple grammatical errors would give me a not so reliable Prompt or output. That’s the only vice that I have other than that great job developers. As a mental health advocate and. A person with mental health hiccups this app is impeccable and so perfect for someone like me. Thank you for your hard work developers.
